Berchtesgaden – 3-day itinerary for a trip with older children

Bavaria, Germany
An easy hop from Salzburg, Berchtesgaden is an attractive town in the Bavarian Alps. Nestled in beautiful countryside, it offers many restaurants, bars and accommodation options. It's also the ideal base for trips to Hitler's Eagle's Nest and stunning Königssee (or “Kings Lake”). While there are lots more things you could do in this area, this is my suggestion of an ideal 3-day itinerary for a trip to Berchtesgaden with older children. Overview of your 3-Day Itinerary Day 1: Morning: Cable car ride (Obersalzburgbahn), short and easy hike through the forest to the bus-stop for the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) Lunch: Restaurant on the terrace of the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) Afternoon: Explore the Eagle's Nest then return to the bus-stop and visit the Dokumentationszentrum Day 2: Morning: Visit Berchtesgaden Salt Mine…

Visiting the Eagle’s Nest, Berchtesgaden with teens and tweens

Bavaria, Germany
Visiting Hitler's Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) was one of our top things to do with teens and tweens in Berchtesgaden. Getting there was half the fun! Looking out from the sun terrace at the Eagle's Nest An even bigger view from the high viewpoint beyond the restaurant terrace Walking from the top of the cable car to Obersalzburg The Eagle's Nest perches dramatically on top of the Obersalzburg Mountain, just outside Berchtesgaden. The Nazi Party built it in the 1930s to mark Hitler's 50th birthday. During the second world war, senior members of the Nazi Party would host visit diplomats in this mountain retreat. Ironically, Hitler himself had a fear of heights and only visited 14 times. Nowadays, the building hosts a mountain restaurant with breath-taking views. Whilst there are photographs…

Bavaria: Königsee with teens and tweens

Bavaria
Königsee (or "Kings Lake") is a simply gorgeous lake in the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden. It's beauty is enough to win over the most cynical of teens and tweens! We visited in May 2024 with our tween boys. We only managed to get out to the lake on our last day in Berchtesgaden as thunder storms were predicted for the previous days! There are some short walks to viewing points on the lake from Schönau am Königssee. It isn't possible to walk right round the lake as the surrounding mountains rise sheerly from the lake shore. As such, the most popular way to visit the lake and do some good hiking is to catch a boat across the lake to either St Bartolomä or Salet (or both). Getting to Königssee…

Spray-painting the Berlin Wall with teens and tweens!

Berlin, Germany
Yes, really! You can do this and it’s not illegal! I’m not suggesting you can pitch up with your cans of paint and start tagging any available remnant of wall. However, as part of a booked graffiti workshop with a local artist, spray-painting the Berlin Wall is lots of fun for teens and tweens! 10 year having fun with spraypaint! Our masterpiece on the Berlin Wall! Final touches! Graffiti culture in Berlin Graffiti culture in Berlin dates back to early 1980s. Today, you will find graffiti everywhere. The authorities have historically prosecuted and fined graffiti artists. However, more recently, the city has commissioned a lot of legally painted graffiti. It has also designated areas (such as the stretch of the original Berlin Wall in the Mauerpark) where anyone can legally…

Homage to Currywurst

Homage to Currywurst

Berlin
Yummy currywurst! Political cartoon at one our favourite currywurst restaurants! You cannot come to Berlin and not eat a currywurst. Seriously, it’s the law (well, it should be!). Even the fussiest teen or tween will love it (and vegetarian versions are available). So what is a currywurst and where should you try one? What is currywurst? The currywurst is German fast food and is ideal for a quick pitstop to refuel hungry teens or tweens (and hangry dads). It’s a budget-friendly option for lunch on the go. It consists of smoked German-sausage, fried and sliced, with spiced and curry flavoured tomato sauce on top. You can have it served with chips or with a bread roll. History of the currywurst The dish was invented just after World War II and…
